The Wildlife at Monkey Mia

Last updated 11 months ago

Drive your way to a once in a lifetime experience with the marine wildlife found at the magnificent Monkey Mia. Next time you plan a family holiday or nature adventure, pack up your car or minibus and set off to see the dolphins and other marine life waiting for you at this unique area.

One of the most popular spots of the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, Monkey Mia is best known as an excellent place to interact with wild dolphins. However, it’s also a beautiful place to spend some time relaxing and soaking up the sea breeze.

The name refers to a particular spot of water, the deepest water accessible at low tide on the eastern side of the Peron Peninsula, but no one is positive where the unusual moniker came from. The climate is just perfect, with blue skies and sunshine 320 days of the year and a very comfortable humidity level.

A wonderful thing about Monkey Mia is the fact that the wild dolphins continue to visit of their own accord, to be fed by whoever is there to greet them. This tradition began in 1969, when wild dolphins would gather to be fed by the fishermen at Monkey Mia. Now, it’s a beautiful, low-key tourist destination in a protected area.
