Toyota Coaster: Overview

Last updated 11 months ago

A flexible, comfortable and popular minibus, the Toyota Coaster was first introduced in 1969. Since then it has undergone a number of upgrades and a few facelifts, but remains a favourite with families and businesses that need a little extra transport space.

The Coaster’s history

In 1969, Toyota released the first Coaster. It was a 17-passanger minibus with the 2.0-litre Toyota R engine with 4-speed manual transmission. Later versions switched to a variety of 4 and 6-cylinder diesel and petrol engines and the early Coasters used the same running gear as the Toyota Dyna, a popular minibus of the time.

A second generation was revealed in 1982 and a third in 1997, when the Coaster Hybrid EV was released. This was Toyota’s first ever hybrid vehicle put into production, coming before the introduction of the ever popular Prius.

The Coaster has also enjoyed a number of facelifts over the years, making sure the exterior design keeps up with the changing trends.

The modern Coaster

The current Coaster is designed to feel like a family sedan, offering a comfortable interior and spacious cabin. It handles precisely and offers a range of safety features, making it an affordable and efficient mode of transport that offers a luxurious feel.
